      <image:title>Stories - Creating A Poster For Schools - The prototype</image:title>
<image:caption>Our goals were to develop an intervention that is both empowering and highly contextualised. Based on the results of both rounds of pre-testing we decided to focus on the fundamentals of prevention and first aid pertaining to snakebite envenoming. The results of the focus groups determined that a poster would be the most befitting in the context of rural schools in Sri Lanka. A poster does not only offer permanence but also has a visual aspect which makes it easier for both teachers and children to learn from. The prototype of the poster contains information from literature studies, specifically, from the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) guideline on snakebites. We wanted to highlight prevention and the do’s and don’ts of first aid. Considering there is a lot of misinformation and outdated information regarding snakebite treatment, it was important to stress what not to do.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stories - Creating A Poster For Schools - Final round of testing</image:title>
<image:caption>The post-test contained the same categories as the pre-test with four additional questions about symptoms of snakebites. Based on the results of a qualitative analysis of the pre-test, we also had improved on the formulation of some of the questions (e.g. negative questions to positive questions). Before the participants conducted the post-tests we showed them the prototype. We gave them 10 minutes to observe the poster and discuss the contents amongst each other. As to not influence their understanding of the poster, I did not give any additional explanations. Afterwards the participants did the final round of testing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Being Dutch Indonesian, also known as ‘Indo’, I never knew where I belonged in this world. In a way, going abroad excited me because I could try out living in a culture that was new to me. As I have always been looking for a place where I could truly be at home. Ironically, the most valuable lesson I have been able to draw from this experience is that home is not a place; home is I.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Did you know that the Dutch used the rooster as a symbol of Galle? The Dutch colonised Sri Lanka in the 17th century and heavily fortified the port of Galle. Walking around Galle Fort you won’t be able to miss its colonial history, Galle truly wears its history on its sleeves. Nowadays, Galle is a big city with a population of more than 93,118 people. Around the city of Galle you will find hilly countryside, palm plantations, and a lot of rural areas. Which is where we focused our fieldwork on.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stories - A cobra in the schoolyard - Panagamuwa Amarasinghe Primary School</image:title>
<image:caption>For the second round of pre-testing and focus groups we visited Panagamuwa Amarasinghe Primary School. The primary school is a government school that was established in the 1950s for the children of low income households. The parents of these students typically have jobs such as fishermen, labour workers, and housemaids. Panagamuwa Amarasinghe Primary School is one of the few schools in the area that does not charge a high annual fee and also offers free breakfast meals for their students. Making this school very attractive to the families of a low economic status.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stories - A cobra in the schoolyard - Little Leaders</image:title>
<image:caption>This was not my first time visiting Panagamuwa Amarasinghe Primary School. For Little Leaders Foundation I coordinate Project READ together with our Project Manager, Ashwini Karunathilaka. Project READ provides all students with scholarships and assists the school with renovations, and purchasing other necessary curriculum resources. Despite the lack of resources, the school has two major strengths; the motivation of the students to learn and the tireless devotion of the teachers to teach. If you want to help out too you can become a sponsor for Project READ via the following link: All Help Is Welcome. It is an understatement to say that we had a very warm welcome from both the students and the teachers! Now back to Project SERPENT.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stories - A cobra in the schoolyard - Project SERPENT</image:title>
<image:caption>Just a quick refresher: Project SERPENT aims to increase the awareness of snakebite prevention and treatment in rural communities. We want to do so by creating a tool that can be used to teach the public about prevention and first aid pertaining to snakebites. Essentially, empowering the rural communities to prevent snakebites and become equipped to aid a person who has been bitten by a snake. In order to create this intervention, firstly, we need to find out what it is that the participants already know about snakebites. Therefore, we have created a pre-test that contains questions from four different categories; (1) general information about snakes; (2) identification of snakes; (3) prevention; and (4) first aid. The pre-test is multiple choice and was translated into Sinhala for the participants of this round of testing. We asked the teachers to fill out the pre-tests individually. If you’re curious about the results, stay tuned for next week’s blog!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stories - A cobra in the schoolyard - Focus group</image:title>
<image:caption>During the focus group we discussed the teachers feelings in regards to snakes. All teachers are scared of snakes and do not know what to do to prevent or treat snakebites. Their fear comes from not knowing the difference between venomous and non-venomous snakes. Upon coming across a snake they typically will call the fathers of the students to come and remove them. This mainly ends in the snake being caught and killed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stories - A cobra in the schoolyard - What’s next?</image:title>
<image:caption>Now that we have collected all the data from our fieldwork we can start developing our intervention! One thing that was important to us was that we would develop something in collaboration with the participants of the project. Hence, ensuring that the intervention would be integrated in the community for the long term! When asking the teachers how they prefer to learn and teach, both groups replied that they would want something physical that could be kept inside the classroom. When it came down to picking a material they all opted for a poster. In the next blog we will show you the final result of the poster and share the results of both the pre-and the post tests! Let’s find out if our intervention worked. Bohoma istuti! (Thank you) Photography by Floortje Tamerus</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mannar Island is a peninsula located on the North coast of Sri Lanka. Mannar is a remote area that makes up for one of the poorest districts in the country, with an average household income of approximately €150,00 per month. Due to its geographic location the local economy is reliant on the fishing industry. Here are some interesting facts: (1) The majority of the population in Mannar is Tamil (ethnicity), who have origins in Tamil Nadu which is in India. (2) The Tamils in Sri Lanka have their own language. (3) The name ‘Manar’ (Tamil: மன்னார் தீவு) means ‘the raised place of sand.’</image:caption>

<image:caption>Upon arriving at our accommodation ‘The White House’, we were welcomed by the family whom we would be staying with. It is a family of five, two parents and three young children. The White House is located in a Muslim village named Putukkudiyiruppu. Prior to coming into this experience we already knew that Mannar would be the most challenging part of the journey as it is so far removed from what we know at home in the Netherlands. Mannar being an impoverished rural area with no tourism, presented a bit of a culture shock to the both of us. However, the hospitality of the hosts and their children quickly made us feel at home. After our first night sleeping underneath the safety of a mosquito net, we felt ready to start the fieldwork. Starting with meetings with Bridging Lanka and the preschool teachers!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Afterwards we discussed how the teachers felt after finishing the pre-test. <image:title>Stories - Staying with a guest family - Testament from a mother</image:title>
<image:caption>During our time in Mannar we met with a local woman for an interview about the loss of her son to a snakebite. She told us the following heartbreaking story. “The story is about my second son who was three years old at the time. We were very poor and lived in the jungle with my parents. My father would store dry wood next to the veranda of the house. On the night of the incident I had prepared food for my family. After dinner my son was very sleepy and fell asleep outside on the veranda. After cleaning the kitchen I put my son to bed. This is when he started vomiting all night long. The vomit looked white and bubbly. At first I thought it was food poisoning. The next day I brought him to the Ayurvedic Doctor because there was no hospital in the village. The Ayurvedic doctor suspected my son was having an allergic reaction. We brought my son home but his condition only got worse. On the second day we decided to bring him to the hospital which was 15 km away. My son’s body started to become very weak, his neck became weak and his head started to hang, he could not open his mouth and eyes anymore, nor could he speak. At the time my sister worked as a midwife in the Hospital. She had started to beg the doctors to take a blood test. By the time the blood results came back my son had passed away. The result was snakebite envenoming. I could not believe this because I had never seen the marks of a snakebite on my son’s body. When my sister and I started washing my son’s body as preparation for the burial, my sister found the marks of a snakebite on the side of the head behind his ear. I have a lot of regrets that we did not find out earlier. My son could still be alive now if we had known he was bitten by a snake.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stories - Our Journey to Mannar</image:title>
<image:caption>As an NGO, Bridging Lanka works together with the community of Mannar by executing research and listening deeply to the community’s wishes before drafting a plan for any project. They do this to make sure their support aligns with the people they’re trying to help. Therefore, I must commend the team at Bridging Lanka for the many projects they have put forth with the drive of uniting and healing the community of Mannar, however difficult it may be. We also visited a few projects by Bridging Lanka and seeing the effort they make gave rise to another layer of profound respect towards these individuals and the work they do. Their motto remains “With heart, head, and hand” and it is crystal clear that the team has the biggest hearts I have ever come across. In a world filled with so many materialistic desires, it was almost unreal to find people who lead with their hearts on their sleeves and focus on bettering their society.</image:caption>

Having volunteered before in a preschool, I noticed how much they prioritized hygiene and health; two things that were heavily absent throughout the schools we visited.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Field Research and Education Developments in Sri Lanka</image:title>
<image:caption>The goal of our stay in Galle, Sri Lanka, was to execute research on the impact of the current economic crisis on the educational system in Sri Lanka. The importance of this research is to highlight what kind of support the students and schools really need to be able to develop further, especially now the economic circumstances have changed. We planned to visit a couple of schools in the area of Galle, amongst which a school where we annually donate school packages to Little Leaders for our Sponsor A Child project. We wanted to evaluate the impact of this project and find out how we can improve it, if necessary. During our research, we focused on analysing the socio-economic problems that Sri Lankan families in our target groups are faced with. Additionally, we were looking to find more suitable solutions to the harsh realities that children from low-income families face during their childhood and educational journey. In this matter, we mainly chose to focus on schools and children who are most negatively impacted by the current economic crisis.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The hygiene could be improved, as the principal indicated that the toilet building is the main problem. One of the toilets doesn’t have a door and the other two have rotten wooden doors. Also, the roofs in general are not stable anymore, the main reason is that the roof construction is made of wood. Sri Lanka has a tropical climate and the wood starts to rot due to humidity and rain.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stories - Lockdown in Sri Lanka</image:title>
<image:caption>A few days ago I drove around the area - Galle, Unawatuna, Mihiripenna and Talpe - looking for schools. The streets, normally filled with groups of schoolchildren, were empty. There were no parents waiting to pick up their children from school. There was no school bell ringing, no sounds of chatting or laughing around the school grounds. The silence was inescapable, and showed me how great the impact of the pandemic is on education, but especially on the daily lives of the youth.</image:caption>

<image:title>Research - Understanding the impact of stigma on mental health - Mental health in modern society</image:title>
<image:caption>Nowadays, we have more profound knowledge and understanding of mental illnesses because of scientific research. Medical resources, treatments, and accurate diagnoses were made available for mentally ill people to support them and help them cope with their illnesses. All of that has provided explanation and clarification over mental illnesses, therefore, people were able to form a better understanding of the illnesses and how they occur. On that account, people were encouraged to get treatments and learn more about mental health. For instance, the United Nations has included mental health in its Sustainable Development Goals to raise awareness about this social issue.</image:caption>

<image:title>Research - Why human contact is vital for the development of children - Do you know the story called Jungle Book by Disney? The story is about a young boy named Mowgli, who was found in a basket in the Jungle of India by a black panther. The black panther, who is named Bagheera, takes Mowgli to a mother wolf who had just given birth to her young cubs. She raised Mowgli amongst her own children. As Mowgli grows up to be a happy boy, Bagheera worries that Mowgli must return to his own kind. One day, the wolf pack has a meeting, because a man-eating tiger has entered their part of the jungle, and the pack leader decides that Mowgli’s time has come to leave the jungle. During his journey, Mowgli encounters a number of problems, as he does not know how civilised human beings act.</image:title>
<image:caption>The Jungle Book is a compelling story which highlights what happens when children from a young age are neglected by humans and how important human contact is for their development. This article will discuss the development of a child from birth until young teens (12-14 years), highlighting phases when human contact is most important and explaining why. The article will end with a few examples of cases where children were deprived of human contact and the effect it had on their development.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The next milestone set by the CDC is around 30 months; the language skills of a toddler are significantly developed as they are capable of speaking and recognising about 50 words. Problem-solving and other cognitive skills have started to develop as well, the toddler can follow two-step instructions, knows at least one colour and can show simple problem-solving skills. In this phase, human contact remains impactful. For example, let a toddler do some “free play” so it can figure out what it likes and explore new things. It is also important for parents to use encouraging and positive words and compliments when you see behaviourisms that you like, such as tidying up toys (CDC, 2022).</image:caption>

<image:title>Research - Why human contact is vital for the development of children</image:title>
<image:caption>The next distinction the CDC makes in the middle childhood phase is children between the ages of 9 to 11 years old. By now, a child is already more involved with friends and focused more on their independence. However, as a parent now it is your duty to watch out for friends who might have a negative influence on your children, because of peer pressure. The CDC therefore advises parents to talk about morals, friendships and the negative influence they might have.</image:caption>

<image:title>Research - The effects of stress on mental and physical health</image:title>
<image:caption>Governments should focus on protecting employee health within the labour market by adapting labour rights to modern society. When employers create healthier work environments and encourage employees to set boundaries, they can take precautions against stress. This would be to the benefit of the company and the employees, but ultimately also to the economy. Portugal leads by example since it banned employers from messaging or emailing staff members after working hours, as part of the new labour laws. The Portuguese government created this law to stimulate a healthier work-and-private-life balance amongst employees, which was more difficult to achieve when employees started working from home since the beginning of the pandemic.</image:caption>

<image:title>Research - Consent: what do you need to know? - Consent comes first!</image:title>
<image:caption>Have you ever heard of Aristotle's famous essay, ‘Human is a Social Animal’? Aristotle argued that human beings can’t survive alone. It is crucial for human beings to interact and connect with each other, in order to fully develop themselves. Humans are intelligent and curious animals that were gifted with a brain that was not fully pre-programmed before birth. This has given the human brain the gift of independence, to develop itself throughout social interactions during one's lifetime. Consent is one of the basic social rules. However, as we enter the year 2022, some humans still find it hard or even uncomfortable to ask one specific question. This hard-to-ask question is regarding consent, especially in the intimate spheres, such as sexual settings. Therefore, the question is, why do people find it difficult to ask for consent? Before we start answering that, let’s begin by defining what consent is.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In recent years a huge number of women have come out to speak up about the traumas they experienced. These women united with each other and started movements such as the #MeToo movement. They spoke up about the abuse they suffered or sexual transgressive behaviour from men like Harvey Weinstein, who never asked for their consent. This behavior has not stopped and the discourse of consent continues. This article will explore several recent stories where consent was violated and studies done on consent.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The dark colours in my drawing symbolize all the difficulties faced by children and their families – most of them are farmers – in my area. When it rains it rains so much. Flooding occurs and harvests are lost. When there is no rain at all, harvests are dried out and lost. The girl in the drawing has four arms: two hands holding a book representing the importance of education, a third hand with water symbolizes the importance of basic needs, a fourth hand holding an umbrella symbolizes the importance of protecting children from too much heat and rain. The depiction of the girl tied with a chain symbolizes all the difficulties which children face in moving forward and getting education in a changing climate and environment. I used unorganized colours to depict the unorganized lives of the children due to climate change and other issues.” (Kagawa, 2021)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Class of 2021 - Visiting the Little Leaders</image:title>
<image:caption>About half of the Little Leaders that we are sponsoring for the school year of 2021 live in the same area. It is a slum near the beach in Dalawella, which can be difficult to reach if you have mobility problems. The houses are on a high hill and to get there you have to climb a steep dilapidated staircase. This staircase is the only connection between the houses in this neighbourhood and the street that leads them to school, work or elsewhere. Two of our Little Leaders, Vihanga and Ravish, live here with their widowed mother. Their father died during service in the army at a young age. Which left their mother on her own ever since. She does, however, receive support from her mother-in-law, and other women in the area. The people in the neighbourhood are aware of each other’s situation, and create a safety net for each other. The people really try and help each other out with every penny they have. Many Little Leaders have come to our organization through this caring community.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Class of 2021 - Saduni and her mother Kumari</image:title>
<image:caption>The second house we visited belongs to Kumari, the mother who guided us through the area. Her daughter, Saduni, is one of our Little Leaders. Kumari said it took years before they were able to finish building their house. It had only been recently that they were able to put a roof over their heads. Her husband lost his job years ago, so Kumari decided to work in a factory. Her working days were long and hard, and she was unable to look after her children during the day because of these long working hours. During our visit, the mothers expressed their gratitude for the funded school packages. Which are unaffordable for them due to the major consequences of the covid-19 pandemic, which has caused an economic crisis and resulted in unemployment for many. In our organization, personal contact with the Little Leaders and their families is very important. Humanity, transparency and equality are our core values. We see the Sponsor A Child project as a collaboration. We are not their 'saviours', they are.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Class of 2022 - One year later…</image:title>
<image:caption>During our most recent registration day, we saw many familiar faces of the Little Leaders who we sponsored last year. We feel honoured to be involved with their growth, and it is fascinating to see the young children develop into the little leaders that they are becoming today. In addition to the children we already knew, many new faces showed up during the late summer afternoon. Apparently, the news of Little Leaders Foundation had spread through the slums in the neighbourhood of Mihiripanna, and its surroundings! We had anticipated the number of children to have doubled. But instead, there was an even larger turnout from children (and their families), with an urgent request to be taken into our program. To help enable them to receive education in the year 2022. That is why we have decided to put all our might together and try and find sponsors for 75 children.</image:caption>

<image:title>Class of 2022 - An expanding community of Little Leaders</image:title>
<image:caption>The new children who register with us are acquaintances or relatives of the Little Leaders of the class of 2021, but the biggest connection they share with each other are their living conditions. Sathsara (14) is one of our newest Little Leaders who dropped out of school a couple of years ago. His motivation to work was to help out his family who were struggling to provide for basic needs. When the word about our program spread in his village, Sathsara’s grandmother attended the registration day seeking a spot for her grandson. Sathsara was not present himself because he was working. When Sathsara’s grandmother found out there was still a spot available, she returned home to share the good news. Sathsara’s grandmother believes he can create better opportunities for himself and his environment if he attends school and completes his education.</image:caption>
