LITTLE TREES

A Nurtury for Mannar

In Mannar, a web of generational trauma, poverty, addiction, limited resources, and poor hygiene poses significant challenges, especially for children. We believe in starting societal change by prioritizing children's development, knowing early interventions are most effective.

To tackle these issues, we support the creation and operation of Little Trees Nurtury, a holistic preschool by Bridging Lanka and Hüsk. This collaborative effort offers educational opportunities and a nurturing environment, empowering Mannar's children and bringing hope to the community.

Ill-equipped schools put children and teachers at risk of health issues

“In an alarming revelation, we discovered that most children lack basic reading and writing skills but possess the knowledge of drug smuggling.”

The children of Mannar face a range of interconnected challenges, from poverty and lack of education to the lingering effects of conflict. These issues create a cycle of despair that demands immediate action. To break this cycle, we must work together to offer comprehensive support not only to the children but also to their families, recognizing that a stable home environment is crucial for the well-being of the children.

Our approach addresses multiple needs, including education, health, and emotional support, while fostering a community that can sustain these efforts long-term. Every child in Mannar deserves the chance to reclaim their childhood and access opportunities for a brighter future. To make this a reality, we must commit to providing safe spaces, quality education, and positive role models, creating a solid foundation for growth and resilience.

The preschool Little Trees Nurtury is the start of a lifelong commitment to the community of Mannar, which is an initiative of Bridging Lanka, Hüsk and Little Leaders Foundation.

The project mission is to hold space for positive early childhood development where holistic learning takes center stage. It involves training local individuals to become educators, offering guidance and counseling programs for parents, and utilizing Little Trees as a hub for the community to convene and collaborate in their efforts to enhance society. Facilitating the Oaklander approach in our curriculum we envision Little Trees making meaningful contact with parents, teachers, and peers and helping develop a positive sense of self.

“Little Trees will be a haven in nature where children can express themselves for the first time, learn to care for each other, learn about nature, about animals, and feed their curiosity.”
